Today, I asked my classmate to look over my essay. His comments were longer than the essay itself. FML

Personally, i appreciate constructive criticism even if i don't see things eye to eye with the editor. Who knows...your classmate might have some helpful suggestions that will get u that A :)

Was it a short essay, or did you just make a lot of mistakes? Either way, that's probably not good.

If his review was good, get him/her to write your next essay. You could review it, just for fun.

Well it's better than them telling you it's great and never even bothering with it?

maybe they were just a really harsh grader and think on the bright side your essay is now going to be that much better.

Well, your post is quite the ambiguous type, since I can't figure out if the comments being longer than the essay itself means that you wrote a really short essay, or if you wrote a long essay and the comments were just unusually long. With that being said, I am also going to assume, since your writing is not clarifying enough, that the comments were not without reason. There, now my comment is bigger than your post.

If nothing else his insight might help op. Doesn't matter if your essay is big or small just how well it gets the point across.

Don't ask someone to proofread your paper if you aren't ready to hear some major suggestions. It is not really worth their time to look over your paper and say, "Looks good." If you know it looks good already, no need to waste their time. If you know you need help, get ready to hear some advice.

Thinking back over this comment, it was a bit harsh. My bad.

I don't usually ask classmates to look over my essay because they, like me, are so self-absorbed in their own work that their feedback usually sucks. In this case, though, it sounds like your classmate put in a good effort to offer you feedback. Assuming his comments were constructive, you should be happy. You honestly can't become a better writer without getting frequently humbled by someone who is better than you. Read his advice carefully, take what you need from it, and your next essay will theoretically be that much better - assuming he was not giving you bad advice.

At least your friend took the time to do that for you :)
