Today, I attended my first day of school 4 days after reconstructive surgery. But no worries: I'm sure my alien-like appearance and 2 hours of Darth Vader style breathing in an otherwise silent test room will make me lots of friends. FML

carobee tells us more.

Hi, OP here! I had an accident, and therefore could not choose the date of the surgery. My face was severely smashed up, my nose broken and my jaw wired shut. It was a summer class and I missed the first 3 days, so by the time I was well enough to go they were already testing. The class was a pre-req I needed for my next year of class, my senior year. I didn't want to graduate late from college, as I am a pre med student and want to take the mcat next summer. I was not seriously worried about making friends, it was just funny to get so many strange looks. Anyway thanks for all the sweet comments, I'm doing much better now and look back to normal!!

Darth Vader breathing sounds pretty cool.

Well good luck, and may the force be with you.

You couldn't schedule your surgery to be done earlier in the summer break? Or postpone till christmas break?

Depending on why she needed reconstructive surgery, she may not have had much freedom in scheduling it. There's a good chance that earlier in the summer she didn't need it, and if there was severe enough damage it might not have been possible to wait months to have it done. Reconstructive surgery and optional cosmetic surgery aren't the same thing.

"Reconstructive" tells me there was some sort of accident that broke bones in her face. You can't really schedule that around other things.

Aawww I'm so sorry, I hope you have a quick recovery.

You might get a couple Star Wars fans...and maybe some people who are curious of what it's like going through that...

... do you even know what reconstructive surgery IS?

I'm so sorry! What happened that you needed reconstructive surgery? I wouldn't worry about making friends, though - real friends don't give a crap about how you look! And for the record, most of the people on this planet who have seen Star Wars wish they sounded like Darth Vader.

True friends laugh with you, not at you. Best friends hang shit on you and stand up for you when you're not around to do so yourself.

Just keep a positive attitude and you will be just fine.
