Today, I broke into tears at work after being told my aunt had a stroke. My boss told me to "suck it up, no one is that close to their aunt." My aunt adopted me when my mother passed away. FML

Thanks for all the supportive comments. When I explained to him the situation he apologised and sent me home. I reported him to my senior manager and he has since received a warning for inappropriate behavior. My aunt is doing really well now, they caught it early and they say she will make a 100% recovery. She's talking again as well, but she will have to stay in hospital for a while for monitoring. Reading all the comments made me feel a lot better as well, thank you!

And your boss is an asshole. Here's to hoping your aunt has a great recovery.

That was very inconsiderate of him and pretty dumb to just assume! A lot of people are close to their aunt.

That's great to hear, OP! I'm glad that your aunt is getting better and your boss received a warning. :)

I'm glad you reported him! He has no right to comment on how you grieve.

Glad to hear your aunt is doing well, she's in my prayers.

I'm glad you reported him. Even if your aunt hadn't raised you, you still could have been really close and it's none of his business how you grieve. Glad to hear she'll be making a full recovery!

Thats awesome! Good to hear! And good job for reporting him! Hopefully thatll teach him not to be so damn insensitive!

Glad you reported him, it was really awful of him to say that. Hope your aunt feels better and is up and about soon OP!

really glad there is no lasting damage from the stroke. i hope your boss thinks about actions next time.

I don't know what I'd do if anything serious happened to my aunt, subby. Glad to hear about her wonderful prognosis, sorry you have to work for such a monumental twat.

glad to hear your aunt is doing well I know how it is my aunt just passed away she had a bunch of medical issues but they say it was her stroke that killed her because her health was already severely horrible and I broke down crying to thankfully my boss was supportive in the situation

Glad to hear she's getting better, time is always key in issues like strokes or heart attacks. I'm also glad you reported him, that was very insensitive and any properly trained management personnel would never make such a statement. Praying for her speedy recovery!

Good for you, OP! Glad you took action, what he said was so wrong. If anything were to happen to my sister, I would adopt my nephew and make sure he was well taken care of. Perhaps he was being an ass because his aunt didn't like him? Either way, I am glad your aunt is doing better, and hope she only continues to improve. Good luck to both you and your aunt!

That is so great that she's talking and is alright! I'm so happy for you. Also, I'm glad that jerk got reprimanded. That was so beyond inappropriate. And yes, some people ARE that close to their aunts/uncles.

Wait....your mom died, your aunt adopted you, and no uncle....omg your Spider-Man. No questions about it.

Well he apologized, and he had certainly learned a lesson, so why reporting him???

Glad to hear that everything's going good op, sorry about your boss though. Insensitive twats like him are what keeps me up at night. Give your aunt my best! Haha

I'm so glad that she is recovering! And it's good to hear that your boss apologised and let you go home early AND that you successfully reported him.

Glad to hear your aunt is doing better. My mother-in-law had a stroke 20 years ago. A lot of the treatments that they use for stroke therapy now were in testing stages when she had her stroke. Twenty years later and you can't even tell she had a stroke. Hope your aunt makes a full recovery!

Wow, that's awesome! I'm glad she's doing good too :)

File some kind of complaint against that twat! No one should be spoken to like that.

She just stated "I reported him to my senior manager and he has since received a warning for inappropriate behavior". I'm gonna go out on a limb here and assume she already filed some kind of complaint. I like your passion though.

I would have quit on the spot

Your boss is a douchebag. Who are they to make that assumption? They don't know people's families.

I agree with the commenters that think your boss is a d-bag. My standard response on hearing someone had a death in the family is "were you close?". Some relatives are very close, others not...that's just how it goes.

I love my aunt. I'd be devastated to hear something like that. OP I'm glad to know your aunt is doing better. Your boss is a douche.
