Today, I broke into tears at work after being told my aunt had a stroke. My boss told me to "suck it up, no one is that close to their aunt." My aunt adopted me when my mother passed away. FML

Thanks for all the supportive comments. When I explained to him the situation he apologised and sent me home. I reported him to my senior manager and he has since received a warning for inappropriate behavior. My aunt is doing really well now, they caught it early and they say she will make a 100% recovery. She's talking again as well, but she will have to stay in hospital for a while for monitoring. Reading all the comments made me feel a lot better as well, thank you!

I would quit that is disrespectful. I was doing home healthcare and one of my clients started an arguement with me because i took some personal days off because of my grandma passing away and i ended up dropping her as a client.

Your boss is awful. It's so upsetting when someone in your family has a stroke, but I can't imagine what it would be like in your situation. I hope she makes a full recovery.

please tell me you reported that asshole I'm close to my aunt Patty and she was the one chosen to be my god mother should my parents have died when I was a child luckily my parents still alive and kicking and I am 25

Your boss really is an inconsiderate jerk. I personally am not close to my two aunts, but one lives several states away, only visiting a few times every couple of years, and the other because of family problems with that side of the family. I do, however, have a niece from my older step-sister, and I love her to death. I was there with my sister through the whole pregnancy, I was one of the first people she told. And I think my little niece hung the moon. :) I really look forward to being able to be super close to her as she gets older. It's totally wrong to assume that family members don't mean anything to someone if they aren't your mom or dad. I really hope your aunt gets better quickly, OP. Keep your head up, and don't bother with stupid people. :)
