When I was a kid, I gave my aunt the middle finger, not entirely understanding what it meant. It was something I'd seen other kids doing at school. It's very likely that the same happened with your 5-year-old. I got a good stern talking-to, and that's all it took for me to stay curse-free in front of my family for, well, forever.
My sides.
Ya you defiantly need to talk to him and if he doesn't stop punish him or take his stuff away
You have a budding family terrorist there. You MUST find out who is teaching him this shit and take action to get him away from this person even if its a family member. Can you imagine him in his first day of school? You have a long difficult road ahead teaching him to "unlearn" and replace it with appropriate behavior. If not , I see prison in his future.
ho-le shiz nit
Its okay I'd one curse word would of slipped out but don't let you children curse you out. The need some Discipline and structure.
Discipline Learn it it's ok to straighten them up one in a while
Discipline him. Give him a spanking. Take something away from him. Do some parenting!
I was never like that when I was 5... That's because I was afraid that my father would give me a knuckle sandwich if I do shit like this... So spank him for those words and for every bad word spank him 2 times. Ground him also.

You cant blame it completely on the child. You being his parent are responsible for his development.
Kids these days grow up so fast...
