55 beat me to it.. I was going to suggest pregnancy. I know someone who ate bricks during pregnancy and her mother ate coal when she was pregnant. Cravings are weird things!

those aren't natural cravings. pica comes in children and in pregnancy. if she is pregnant and is showing signs of pica, its important to get it checked asap so nothing harms the babys development.
