Today, I completely shaved my head as a gesture for my boyfriend's mother, who was suffering from cancer and having a terrible time undergoing chemotherapy. Turns out she doesn't even have cancer, and my boyfriend thought I wouldn't have the guts to do it. FML

#34: I'm sorry for your loss, and I'm sorry for losing my temper. I just can't believe people think that cancer victims "milk" people for sympathy or money. I know several living cancer sufferers, and they play it down. They don't like people noticing their lack of hair or wigs or their obvious suffering. I have extreme respect for those brave souls.

Who in the **** would want to pretend they have cancer to milk it? My mother had cancer, and from watching her, that shit is hell. Along with that, a family friend and my grandfather died from it. Cancer isn't a joke, and I hate when people pretend it is. People die from it, and some people need to show more respect.

I never said cancer is a joke. I made a joke about an fml that was about cancer. I also never said people with cancer "milk it". Relax. My step dad has cancer and my aunt was just diagnosed. This isn't a support group it's a humor site so stop getting your panties in a twist. I'm sorry I offended you or made you uncomfortable it probably was insensitive, but it wasn't supposed to be interpreted the way you guys took it. And I'm sorry for all your losses but I just figured I'd make a joke, believe me I know the seriousness of cancer as well as you.

We know it isn't a support group, but when it comes to things like cancer, it just shouldn't be joked about. I understand people have different ways of dealing, and you found it amusing. But others who've had loved ones have cancer or die from it may not find that same joke funny. I think you just have to be careful when dealing with sensitive issues.

Sounds to me like you are an infinitely kinder, more compassionate, and all around better person than your boyfriend. You're wasting your time with this asshole. Find someone who is worthy of a truly good person such as yourself. That was really a very sweet thing for you to do. I actually found it quite touching. It's a shame your noble gesture was based on a cheap joke.
