Well it isn't unless you're successful, which is unlikely for most people.
Actually, there is quite a large market for it. Some people do it part time as a hobby yes, but it's one of those things that it's not too difficult to get into given the time and effort. But, you do need to put in the time and effort.
It is definitely an up and coming career nowadays #13. I have a friend in the app business, he designs and builds apps for corporates, along with 150 colleagues at the company he is employed at.
It sounds like he's stuck in the 20th century. Get the man a smartphone!
Says the guy quoting his grandma to people.
It's a talking dog, they're already in the 21st century ;)

Nah, I get the feeling OP's dad is one of those who thinks a job is only that which causes you to break a sweat.
Tell him whatever brings in the money is a job and you like doing it
App developer? That's a kiddy job. Tell him you're a code monkey. That sounds more like a proper occupation! :)
Code monkey like Fritos...
Code monkey likes Tab and Mountain Dew.

He's just mad because you're making better money doing less physical labor than he has/had to. Don't feel bad, programming and developing are still very much hard work.
One of those "Go out and learn a trade and do good old fashioned hard, manual labour" types. Luckily there are still people like that out there or who would fix our plumbing or electrics?
