Today, I donated blood for the first time. I'm completely healthy and after waiting the appropriate amount of time I left, feeling fine. That is until I went out to eat with my family an hour later and passed out in front of the whole restaurant. FML

hi_there4397 tells us more.

Hey there! I'm the OP :) I'm so happy this actually got published! Ok so just to clarify things I'm well over the minimum weight to donate and I ate food and drank liquids before, during, and after the donation. It was an hour later and we went to a place called organ stop pizza (lovely restaurant in AZ) and I started feeling dizzy most likely because the lights started flashing and loud music was playing. I got up to go to the bathroom (to puke :P) and on my way there I passed out. But I fell on my knees and caught myself before blacking out. The ambulance came and said all my levels were normal besides my low blood pressure and they let me go home to lie down and eat ice cream. So sorry for the long post but if you read this far then I love you! PS this incident won't stop me from donating again (I'm AB+) I'll just tell them to maybe do a reduced volume next time :)

I passed out the first time I donated blood. I just did it while they were taking mine. They made me drink gatorade while still drawing it.

Hmmm, you just discouraged me from giving blood. Jk, make sure to eat thw prepared snacks after giving, because you could get dizzy while on the way to get food.

Next time try eating something before you donate, preferably an hour or so before.

I know the feeling. I have given many times without a problem the last time i also passed out

When I passed out before, it was just because they were drawing a few blood samples. I wasn't even giving blood. But good for you OP, and stay strong! :)

Its always good to meet other FFA Members Im from Oklahoma and Im my chapter's sentinel.

Yes I love meeting other members too! I'm from Arizona and last year I was the chapter reporter however this year I'm just an officer at large :)

You should always drink and eat before you donate, or at least right after - of course you'll pass out waiting for food if you didn't have anything! They just took a bunch of your blood out!

Drink water & have some food in you before & after you donate. And don't worry, first time I gave blood, 2 hours after, I fainted in front of my p.e. class during roll call.

My reason for not being able to give blood isnt faint related so if you can keep going! FYL indeed

I am so glad that I am not the only one that this has happened to! I donated blood years ago one morning, absolutely fine until the afternoon in a bar watching rugby (not drinking) and I face planted off a bar stool! Not cool at all.
