Today, I finally decided to try an alternative to peanut butter, since I found out I was allergic a while back. Two hours later I had to be sent home because the allegedly allergen-free SunButter caused my lips and throat to swell and patches of rashes to form all over my body. FML

That could be a possible lawsuit against them

You know you have bad allergies when you are allergic to hypo allergenic alternatives!

Sounds like a simple printing error - you see, the words were the wrong way round - it was supposed to read "free allergen". I'll speak to the intern about this on Monday.

you are lucky you are alive. Totally avoid peanut ANYTHING. Or get into specialist for complete testing.

There is another alternative called WowButter that is made from soybeans. I absolutely despise the stuff, but my mother, who became allergic to nuts about six years ago, loves it and uses it as an alternative in every recipe calling from peanut butter.

WowButter is so good. I have both crunchy & smooth.

it may have had writing on the packaging that told you it was manufactured on the same tray as nuts

Try Biscoff cookie butter. My son is allergic to peanuts and that's what we buy. It's sold at Walmart and World Market. You can also buy it online.

OP, My son and I both have anaphylactic allergies to peanuts and tree nuts. We've used IMHealthy "soynut" butter, and SunButter for years, without problem. Both say they're manufactured in a peanut free (and I think tree nut free) facility. I am not a doctor. But have dealt with severe allergies my whole life and have had to be my own advocate. I would Highly suggest talking to your doctor and getting a blood test done for sunflower seeds. While being allergic to nuts isn't directly linked to being allergic to sunflower seeds, it sounds like you very well could be allergic to sunflower seeds. And if that's the case, you may want to ask to be tested for allergies to sesame. Please be your own advocate. Read labels. Take "may contain" or "produced in a facility..." "produced with shared equipment", etc, very seriously. Nut and seed oils and byproducts exist in a ton of other things like lotions and hair products. not just food. (Shea Butter comes from a nut btw...) If you're buying anything made in a factory setting or a bakery or restaurant, be very cautious. Didn't mean to write a book. I empathise with you 100% and know how overwhelming it can be at first. (It does start to feel less overwhelming). My thoughts are with you, OP. please talk to your dr again. Get an allergist if you don't have one already. Find one that specializes with food allergies. And always be your own advocate :)

i know how much that sucks. I'm allergic to tree nuts, and I can never have sunbutter because it has the same effect on me.

All companies lie about their contents. If a product is below a legally defined % of an ingredient they can say the product is free of that ingredient. For instance, I am allergic to the protein in dairy, not the lactose. If a burger touches cheese, even if it's pulled off quickly, I cannot eat that burger without a reaction. So many items and even vegan stores (I am not vegan, they just carry lots of "dairy free" items) say no dairy, but it's just at extremely low lactose % or even lactose free, but they still used dairy. I have a list of lying companies I've recorded over the years to make sure I don't get sick from the deception.
