Today, I flew to Dubai, en route to my new job in Afghanistan. Both of my bags were lost, my debit card was frozen in London, the next flight was cancelled, and I can't get a hotel room. I'm in the richest city in world with no money and no room. Happy New Year. FML

Feel bad for you. I hope you get money and a room. I wish you the best of luck. Happy new year 2012!

Hey, in a few days you'll be in the poorest country in the world, so you'll fit right in. Consider this ordeal as training for your new post.

That's horrible, but cheer up. There is always a silver lining. From the biggest douche: HAPPY 2012, Mate!!!!!

Pretty sure Togo and Republic of Congo are poorer. But your point still stands.

I've been to Dubai about 7 times now and all you have to do is let your bank know you're going to be over seas so they don't freeze up your accounts. If your going to afghanistan to work then I'm going to assume you're in the military on orders in which you can get reimbursed for your hotel expenses on your travel claim. Dubai international has plenty of resources to help you out, it's not as bad as you're making it so far.

Sounds more like he's working as a contractor, seeing how servicemen deploy as a unit and never on their own like the OP.

If I had to lend a slightly different perspective on the contractor/military differences when it comes to deployments, it would be to say that it depends on the situation. When I was a Soldier, there was a contractor that traveled with us because he was to do maintenance on systems. In other cases, they aren't immediately essential or their companies have a different modus operandi, so they come separately. |the kid|

It's like you weren't meant to go to Afghanistan.

Second richest. Abu Dhabi is the richest, and just a short cab ride away. But since you lack the funds to take said cab, I digress... But yes, your anguish is justified.

Its what they claim to be, with a small local population and huge oil revenue, go figure...

My father lived in Dubai. 2 years later he was broke. Trust me it's not worth it
