I find it interesting that the children we have been warned for the past 20 years to not spank because "spanking makes violence seem ok in their minds" apparently feel that an appropriate first choice response to any life situation is violence.
Well I am 21 and I was spanked for the first decade or so of my life. However, as an 8 year old, I one day found that an expensive golden ring with my birthstone was no longer in my backpack at my desk. I thought I had lost it, but I suspected it could have been stolen as well. I kept quiet, though. Then one day, I saw a girl wearing my ring. I knew it was mine because it has a dent in it from where they the jeweler had re sized it. I could barely speak Russian (as my school was a Russian school) but I politely walked up and asked her where she had gotten that beautiful ring. She pointed to her friend. I asked her the same thing. She looked at me nervously and said she bought it at the store. I said ok. Then I went and explained to my teacher that it was my ring and that she said she bought it. They took her aside. The next thing I new she was handing it back and apologizing. No violence there. :)
ur first mistake waz taken bak u shoulda took what u wanted an left tha purse ther
did she say sorry after? lol
If that was me I would be like " oh that's mine" and then they would say " yea I was bringing to the office" That's how I do it..
thats what you get for trying to help people
Even if you did steal it that wouldn't warrant a punch to the face. FYL OP.
Something similar happened to my mother-in-law. She found a purse and as she was trying to find an employee to turn it in to, the woman who owned it came back to find her holding it. She made such a scene, insisting that my MIL was trying to steal her purse (even though she gave it right back) that my poor MIL ended up getting arrested. Kind of makes you think twice about bothering to do the right thing in that situation, which is sad.
Find her and steal the purse

No good deed goes unpunished. Just explain it to her and keep doing the right thing.
It's ok OP. at least you were trying to do the right thing. Don't let her terrible reaction stop you from doing good things like that again.
