Today, I found out how easy it is for people to get into my flat when I found bailiffs in my kitchen at 9am. They had picked the lock to look for someone who doesn't live at my address, but at least had the courtesy to tell me how to make my home more secure. FML

LadyFahrenheit tells us more.

I just want to give more of an insight of the events surrounding the bailiff intrusion. A couple of weeks prior to finding them in my kitchen, I received a letter from an electricity company, which was intended for another customer. I contacted the electricity company to inform them I had received a letter for someone else, and they assured me that they would rectify their mistake. Fast forward a fortnight - I found bailiffs in my kitchen. They had picked the lock to gain entry, and had a search warrant, which they claimed gave them the right to enter my home. However, once I told showed them my I.D. and informed them their search warrant was invalid since I wasn't who they were looking for, they soon left. It baffles me how they could say it was so easy to open my front door, when they'd opened it with locksmith tools. I'm definitely going to have to improve my home security to avoid another incident like this.

Bailiffs? Wtf? You mean the fat security guards in the court rooms? I didn't know they worked outside the court.

There's a particular sort of bailiff (Sherrifs) who have more powers granted by the High Court to enter premises and seize goods. However, even they are not legally allowed to enter a private residence without consent. Some Bailiff companies try to intimidate people into allowing them to take all sort of illegal actions. You should report this to the police as an attempted burglary.

That's actually not a bad end result, I can think of a lot more worse things that could of happened...buy some better locks and you'll be good OP :) plus you'll have a cool story to tell

Good point would you rather lose money and jewelry or learn how to make your home more secure. Your no bad luck Brian today

They aren't allowed to just break in to homes. It's illegal

Be happy they told you, now you shouldn't have this issue again.

That's pretty creepy. They could be scooping out your place for a future break in and accidentally got caught. And if they weren't and were honestly just waiting on you or something, That's wrong, You should mentally note those people who don't understand " things that you aren't suppose to do. " or " no no's " They are dangerous to themselves and others.

So, did you offer them a cup of coffee?

"Hello Estuansis, The following comment has been moderated for not being in line with the website’s rules regarding comments: Reason: Inappropriate comment. You posted a comment that has no place on a website like FML. This sort of NRA rant is irrelevant to the FML, please chill out and keep it off our website, thanks." I love it how moderators simply delete things they don't like, even though it is presented in a respectful, non-insulting way and fully adheres to the rules of posting on this site, which your message again referred me to. I re-checked the rules and checked them again. I have not violated any listed code of conduct on this site. For your own convenience, so as to clarify that YES, I HAVE read the rules. Have you?: "Please don't post any shocking or hateful comments about other users or the original poster of the FML. Remember, FMyLife is a site open to a wide audience. Please don't post any comments which question the validity of an FML (accusing the original poster of submitting a fake story, or arguing that an anecdote is "not FML worthy" or "even "not an FML" based solely on your own personal intuition or opinion isn't very fair. Furthermore, it ruins the other users' reading experience). TXT language and out of context comments are forbidden. Flooding or spamming the comments section (posting three or four comments at a time in rapid succession) is forbidden. Advertising of any kind is forbidden. Have fun! (Yes, seriously, it’s a rule. Sorry for saying "forbidden" so much.)" Perhaps the rules should be modified in some way. As of right now, I have not violated them at all with any post on this thread. A moderator with different political views simply deleted them out of spite. I was simply discriminated against for my beliefs. Maybe there should be certain controls and restrictions on moderators so that they can't delete things based solely on personal opinion? As you can plainly see, from the rules that YOU YOURSELVES JUST REFERRED ME TO, I have not violated anything. At all. So what? We're not allowed to post anything someone else might not agree with? I call bullshit. Just because you don't agree, or find the conversation somewhat heated, means you just delete it on a whim? It was fully within the context of the posted FML, and VERY appropriate to the situation. I made no insults or insinuations towards anybody. Lovely double standards on this site :) Also, I have no affiliation with or like for the NRA. My posts had nothing to do with my political alignment, and I was not ranting. I was presenting KNOWN FACTS AND STATISTICS that anyone can Google or otherwise look up for themselves. I was discussing matters of civil rights and how they apply to different areas of the nation and the world, and also how they apply to this particular FML. So YES, it was VERY within the context of this post and VERY appropriate. In case you didn't know, the internet is a wonderful place for people to express their opinions openly and anonymously without prosecution or discrimination. Except one small problem here, the tone of the warning message sent to me was very politically charged, and very biased to one side of the political spectrum. I presented my argument in a politically neutral and respectful way. I presented facts and only facts. No opinions.

Better locks... Cameras... Yeah, and more locks... Sorry, I'd be paranoid if I were in your shoes when this happens...

England doesn't have the same gun laws as America. That would most likely make the situation worse.

Call the police, they will give you more reliable advice on security and if you make a report the bailiffs can be arrested for burglary. Then complain to your local council. In England and Wales a baliff cannot enter a property except through invitation (like a vampire) or an OPEN window or door (not like a vampire).
