Today, I found out I need serious surgery on my right knee to remove a tumor growing underneath it. I will not be able to walk for 3 weeks, and the doctor told me to take off for 5 months from work just for full recovery. My father's response, "You'll do anything not to work." FML

your dad is pretty right, doctors are a crock many times when it comes to the amount of time it takes for healing. Case and point: doctor tells me that after surgery that i will have severe swelling and headaches and prescribed 2 months worth of hydrocodone (aka vicoden for those not familiar with the actual name of the drug). I didnt get any swelling and the headaches were less than minor (ibuprofen took care of it). He also said that i won't be able to do anything for 5-6 weeks after the surgery...i was off of the hydrocodone after 18 hours and running 3-4 miles within 6 days. Pretty much if you think the recovery to take the 5 months, it will take you 5 months. If you think the recovery will take less time, it is going to take less time. An under-appreciated part of healing is what you think about it....it has a profound affect in either direction if you let it
