Today, I found out my father didn't have a rare brain disease, and that he was just an alcoholic. I've been taking care of him every time his "brain disease" acts up, for 2 years. FML

Didn't you notice the smell of alcohol but FYL

Your dad might be a dick, but you're a special kind of stupid. How did you not notice the stench of alcohol coming off his mouth?

Technically, alcoholism is a disease. And he could be self-medicating for depression or another mental illness. Hope you can get your dad some help.

If he's been a heavy drinker for a long time, chances are he's got an alcoholic brain injury. This would cause neurological deficits, even if he hadn't recently been drinking, therefore OP might not necessarily notice the smell of alcohol on him.

There's something called Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome. It's a brain disorder caused from alcohol abuse. Perhaps he is suffering from this?

OH NO!! You had to take care of your dad for once, instead of the other way around. So sorry!

How did you miss the unmistakable scent of alcohol?

Brain disease doesn't smell like booze Hun. Your dad is a total dick but you should have educated yourself better.

Nor does vodka, or alcohol induced brain damage. So should you.

Wow, dickness aside, he kind of deserves a medal for that trick. First, that it actually worked and second, it worked for 2 years. That is some grade-A BS right there.

Korsakoff’s syndrome and Wernicke/Korsakoff syndrome are particular forms of alcohol related brain injury which may be related to alcohol related dementia.

well severe alcoholism could lead to Korsakoff's syndrome which is similar to dementia
