wow that's ****** up. i'm sorry :(
If this were about a significant other, I'd be quick to say dump the asshole. Unfortunately, it's not that easy with family. :( I'm sorry. FYL. Congratulations on your graduation though. :
I'm sorry
"spent countless torturous hours getting through college looking forward to the day you would dress up and be the center of attention when the dean hands you that piece of paper in honor of your achievement. " Um, no. Not even close. I spent countless hours busting my butt so I can go out into the real world and do what I love for a living. I bet if you polled everyone at any graduation, no one would tell you that standing there and hearing their name was anything like a real motivation for them to succeed. The actual ceremony remains a tremendous waste of our time. Sadly, there doesn't seem to be a "mail me the degree and leave me the hell alone" option that wouldn't upset the parents.
Where do you live?? My family and I will come to see you graduate!!!! myspace.com/smileb182
Hahahaha. I think I just now realized part of the reason why nobody else in your family has ever gone to college. I had my 8th-to-9th Promotion Ceremony today. 2 hours. My principal practically stood there and gave her dissertation on the opportunities we were all presented with. She even had this kid's toy that appears to be a little ball but expands if you pull on it. Kids were sighing and screaming "OH MY GAAAAWD" at her 45-minute long speech. My only comment was "You pulled me out of bed at 5 in the morning for THIS?" Don't feel down, man. If your family doesn't want to go, let them be, they're missing out on one of the proudest moments of their life and they'll probably regret it. The next time your family asks you to go to something that is huge and important to them, don't go. Unless it's like a relative dying. Then go.

You didn't spend 60k on the ceremony... you spent it on the education you got, and the diploma.
Guess you get a free ticket to not go to one of their weddings, funerals, etc...!
