Today, I found out that rats have made my car their new home. I haven't even finished paying it off yet. FML

Hey Guys, OP here! I'm amazed this got posted, haha. As for my rat situation - Thank you for all the suggestions. I'll definitely try and trap them in the sticky traps. For anyone telling me to clean my car, I work in pizza delivery and my cars actually very clean. I have to clean it on a regular basis, But that doesn't mean it won't smell like food all the time. A little extra backstory, Our neighbors had a rat infestation, too. We're assuming that whichever rats survived decided to make our trash cans their home, and since my car is right next to the trash cans, They got in. Also, For the people saying to use cats - A family member suggested we use our kittens to get them out. Which I'm not going to do.

Wear a baseball cap and put one lucky rat inside of it...it'll teach you how to be the best driver in America by tugging on your hair!

Time to clean your car from the inside.

Throw a street cat init. Takes care of the problem.

Solution: Adopt 3 cats. Put them in the car. Close off all possible ventilation. The cats will soon get hungry and eat the mice. Then throw eggs on everything. Mice hate eggs. Mwahaha

Um. Where did you get that idea?

Brilliant! I see no possible way that could fail.

This happens to clean cars. Rats are drawn to the plastic used on wiring by some car manufacturers and will climb inside to chew the wiring. An even more common occurrence is they are drawn to the warmth of a car during the winter months. You know those warnings you see when the weather gets cold telling you to check your car for animals before starting it? Guess what, it's not just cute little cats that climb in for the warmth. However, unlike cats, rats or squirrels will move into crevices within the body and make nests, chew up the plastic interiors (Goodbye consoles!), destroy the wiring, and ruin your car. Whatever you do DON"T USE POISON! I've seen too many people ruin their car this way. A poisoned rat will find the most hidden spot to die in an effort to protect itself and then your car will smell of dead rat. Someone suggested peppermint oil. Try that in massive quantities and sticky paper to trap them. Good luck.

I caught 4 mice in my car this winter. We don't have rats in Alberta so I'm not sure if spring loaded rat traps exist, but if they do, I'd use them rather then sticky paper. They don't suffer as much, if at all, when you break their neck, and then you dint have to worry about having a still alive rat "stuck" in your car.

Dryer sheets work well too. Mice and rats chew on the wires because they can smell the peanut/vegetable oil used by certain wire manufacturers during the production process. Mics/rats also urinate on what they chew up which can result in a car going up on flames.

Have you ever seen a rat on sticky traps? It's ******* cruel! They try and rip themselves off of it in fear resulting in their skin being ripped off. Try the peppermint oil and/ or humane traps. At least you can set them free somewhere away from your home and car that way.

You tell Nancy Pelosi to get out of there.

clean your car then call an exterminator.

Something similar happened to me a while back (a mouse instead of rats). Just get a few twist traps, put a glob of peanut butter in them, and set them in places you wouldn't think to (enclosed and somewhat hard to get to). I put mine on top of my spare tire, under the mat in my trunk. Within a couple days it caught the mouse. Then, the trap is fully enclosed, so you don't have to touch a dead rodent.

A rat died a couple days ago in the company work truck me and my coworkers use and the smell is starting to get unbearable but we can't find the rat to remove it. **** our lives.

this happened to my dad and his car is clean as a whistle. gets detailing and a car wash every week. it's nothing you can control. they just hate you

It's good you decided against using the kittens. Rats are large rodents and not many fully grown cats have the skills to hunt them. Good luck with the glue traps though!

I'm not sure, but I thought I'd seen people say sticky traps are actually cruel. I'm not completely sure though.

hopefully you can find them before they start dying.

I wouldn't suggest sticky traps actually. You end up having to kill the rat yourself because they are just stuck, not dead... I would suggest a rat trap with poison in it if you are going to kill them. The first rat will take the poison back to the nest and they will all eat it.

Glue traps are terribly cruel. The animal dies of dehydration if left on the trap, and even if you find them quickly and kill them yourself, they may be suffering and in shock after struggling so hard they literally break bones or pull them out of socket because they're desperate to escape and just can't. That aside, they may trap animals you did not intend to kill - lizards, birds, squirrels, etc. It's a gruesome, terrifying way to die. Would not recommend.

Aha! Will not be using glue traps then. I may dislike rats but I've owned rodents before and have a soft spot for animals. Although wild lizards aren't exactly common here. We've decided to use bait traps with the poison bait and all, Along with the peppermint suggestions.

I hate rats and such and luckily my cat has a natural habit of getting rid of them, because I would never be able to use glue traps or rat poison. I had a dog die because she ate some boxes of rat poison that we didn't know she could reach and it was terrible. I wouldn't want any of my other animals to fall to the same fate, but I also couldn't bring myself to torture the rats even if I hate them.

The truth is, snap traps that break their necks tend to be the most humane of the killing options. I'd love to say use live traps but that just isn't always a practical option :( If you know somebody with working ferrets or terriers trained in ratting, they're also a very good option.

try using a shock kill trap. the most humane if you ask me. it immediately kills them or get a terrior. my terrior killed my rat sadly.

Actually, The local hardware store is getting some in next week. Unfortunately, We were forced into setting Sticky Traps. The exterminators recommended it and we haven't seen any rats tonight after setting the sticky traps and bait traps. If anymore pop up, We will be getting the electric trap. Fourty dollars is relatively pricy, for it though.

That sounds horrible. Those poor animals! There must be a better way to get rid of rats.
