Today, I found out that Yale had actually accepted me 17 years ago. My mother apparently burned my acceptance package and letters because she didn't want me to upstage her UChicago degree. FML

OP here. To the people who said I deserved it, my psychotic mother actually had the balls to craft a ******* rejection letter and mail it to me. I was sixteen and had never seen an authentic denial letter from Yale---you guys would've believed it, too, had you been in my shoes. To the people who keep bringing up e-mail: it was 1996. As my generation will tell you, we grew up without the internet. To the people who agree that my mom's a bitch, damn straight she ******* is. My daughters and son will not be seeing much of mee-maw anymore, nor will I. To the people who said I wouldn't be who I am today without that lie: Doesn't matter; parents are supposed to nurture their children, not deprive them for personal gain.

In some fields, University of Chicago is more prestigious than Yale. Maturity is not one of them.

Whew! Can't imagine being lambasted with something like that-I would just try to forget about it and move on, see if I could take at least some online Harvard classes to say I went, at least you still have bragging rights!

Still, that is a blow-just remember, you had what it took to make it, anyway, I would really limit/monitor the kids' time with grandma from now on-she sounds really dysfunctional, the problem is, she is still you mother!I would also try to not let this eat at you, best way to do that is forgive and move on!

Oh, and I would try to get a copy of the acceptance letter if it were possible, and hang it on my wall! Bragging rights, you know! But you HAVE done better than your mother, you sound successful, happy, and functional with a good family!

oh my god that is horrible its a shame you weren't my sibling my mom be happy she had a kid in Yale my brother went to college in Natchitoches and my younger sister is going to Toulane in New Orleans my older sister is close to getting her degree at Nicoles and all children of a woman who only has a high school deploma because she's proud of her kids

I would never talk to her again! Like seriously parents are supposed to want more for their kid than what they had...

This sounds like something that could happen in the show Arrested Development.
