Today, I found out that Yale had actually accepted me 17 years ago. My mother apparently burned my acceptance package and letters because she didn't want me to upstage her UChicago degree. FML

OP here. To the people who said I deserved it, my psychotic mother actually had the balls to craft a ******* rejection letter and mail it to me. I was sixteen and had never seen an authentic denial letter from Yale---you guys would've believed it, too, had you been in my shoes. To the people who keep bringing up e-mail: it was 1996. As my generation will tell you, we grew up without the internet. To the people who agree that my mom's a bitch, damn straight she ******* is. My daughters and son will not be seeing much of mee-maw anymore, nor will I. To the people who said I wouldn't be who I am today without that lie: Doesn't matter; parents are supposed to nurture their children, not deprive them for personal gain.

In some fields, University of Chicago is more prestigious than Yale. Maturity is not one of them.

Wow, that sucks! You should reapply and go further your current degree just to spite her.

You might not get 3x your moneys worth of education, but you might get 3x the money in job offers. Unfortunately, employers look at high priced education when making hiring decisions. Especially when it comes to compensation packages.

#13, #22, actually, University of Chicago is an outstanding school, but it is not widely known beyond academic circles because they don't participate in high-end intercollegiate sports. For both highly selective schools, very few students who qualify for admission have to pay the entire nominal tuition. It really comes down to which school has the better program in your chosen field of study that really determines which is the best choice.

I guess everyone's sarcasmometer is set to "OFF" today.

Docbastard U have a patient in exam 3 that is in desperate need of your sarcastometer.

You quoted the cost for a full year at Yale versus a quarter at UChicago. UChicago is actually the more expensive school.

It's Yale, you can write your ticket to anywhere with a degree from Yale.

perdix 29

#52, don't believe that "write your own ticket" expression. Have you ever tried to get into a concert with a ticket you wrote yourself? Let me tell you, they throw you out on your ass! A degree from a prestigious school is a definite leg up, but it's far from a guarantee that you'll get exactly what you want. Don't let that nonsense phrase make you overconfident.

It doesn't ******* matter. It's OP's decision if he goes or not.

As is yours.. I see no sarcasm in what u wrote

Holy crap docbastard got thumbed down and buried, something I didn't think I would ever see.... and how could you not tell he was using sarcasm? It was painfully obvious.

Holy shit. Your mother is seriously deranged. This is a "I no longer have a mother" offense in my book, disown that horrible woman. :(

Well unfortunately in this day and age you have to have a college degree if you want to get anywhere good in life. Unless you're a Mark Zuckerberg type who can find success starting your own business you're pretty much screwed. (Though I could be wrong. This is just according to what I've seen)

It is a large debt but there are ways around it. Community college and a transfer to a 4yr institution is a great way. I owe nothing since I've been paying out of pocket. An education is worth it.

Forget the debt. Even if you could not afford to go. Just knowing you were accepted by YALE s a big deal. Then there is the reason she burned (because she was a vile, selfish and petty person and a worse mother) the letter. That's in excusable. She is like the queen in Snow white

It depends where you live... where im from if you want to apply to a half decent job, companies won't even look twice at your CV if you don't have a degree. :/

17 years ago a college degree was worth more in the job market than it is now. You cannot compare todays economic market to that of almost 2 decades ago to what was available for jobs and pay for those who had degrees.

Zehla, I'm guessing you're either a liberal arts major or you didn't go to college. Either way, a good college degree will pay for itself many times over, and a degree from Yale would definitely have higher returns than from UChicago.

I have a job that is impossible to get with out a college degree from an accredited 4 year college, and with grants/scholarship + me working my way through college to pay down my loans before they were due, its already paid for itself many times over. My ultimate career goal requires me to complete graduate school/get my doctorate but it will also pay for itself. College isn't a money sink unless you take out loans for all four years, get crap grades and don't apply yourself when looking for a job that correlates to your education.

That's horrible! How could your mother damage your future like that!

Because her 'mother' is an evil, selfish bitch! :(

Shame! My parents always wanted my sisters and me to do better than them to show that they were great parents raising us.

I'm assuming her mother told her, since her mother said the reasoning was because she didn't want her to upstage her degree.

Your mother is a full out B I T C H ! ! !
