Today, I gave my boss a gift card as a late birthday present, since I wasn't in the office on his actual birthday. He accused me of trying to bribe my way to a promotion, and suspended me on the spot. FML

Today, my boss fired me for "fooling around" on my phone. I was looking for supplies for a surprise party we are throwing him for his birthday, and I didn't want to do it on my work computer because he has access to our history. Also, this happened during my lunch break. FML

Today, I was getting lunch at a fast food restaurant. My boss was in front of me, and in order to get on his good side I offered to pay. Instead, I got fired because I guess my boss assumed I was making fun of his salary, which I knew nothing about. FML

Today, my slacker co-worker accused me of stealing because I got more hours than him. I was called into the manager's office and interrogated. They believed him, and sent me home for the day. I guess it pays off being the boss's kid. FML

Did anyone else get him anything? Or was it just you? Around my place of business, office birthday parties are a card an cake event. No real presents. But he still sounds like a dick to me.

You should have given him hookers, beer and/or weed. He has more money than you -- he's your boss! Normally, he can't buy those things for himself, so when some underling handles those transactions for you, that gets remembered at promotion time ;)

General rule of thumb in the corporate world is you don't gift up. If the whole office chips in for something for the boss,fine. If you weren't there, you missed it. When you're back in the office, offer a belated "Happy Birthday" and keep moving. Even though OP's heart was in the right place, he broke an unwritten rule. Boss could have been less of a dick about it, though.

Did you pay for the gift card from the office petty cash? Lesson learned on that one I guess. Maybe he just didn't want to get you anything for your birthday.
