Today, I gave my boss a gift card as a late birthday present, since I wasn't in the office on his actual birthday. He accused me of trying to bribe my way to a promotion, and suspended me on the spot. FML

Today, I was getting lunch at a fast food restaurant. My boss was in front of me, and in order to get on his good side I offered to pay. Instead, I got fired because I guess my boss assumed I was making fun of his salary, which I knew nothing about. FML

Did anyone else get him anything? Or was it just you? Around my place of business, office birthday parties are a card an cake event. No real presents. But he still sounds like a dick to me.

28, while I agree with you that OP's action was a very nice and friendly gesture, and I don't know what happened to our world. Most of the companies I worked for have strict gifting policy, and the one I'm working for has zero gifting policies... It does make sense from the business perspective, because "gifts" might bias your decision making in some cases, and gift card is pretty much same as cash gift... Anyway, a hand written birthday card or something like that would have been nice

29 it makes sense when I think about it, personally I've never worked at a company that had any gifting policies. I don't think suspension was the proper response though. The boss could have thanked OP and refused the gift if it was necessary
