Today, I got a message from my teacher about my homework. We were supposed to write an original myth explaining a natural event. My teacher bumped my grade for it down to a C for copying a myth that already exists. My myth was based on an original story I've been writing for two years. FML

well on the bright side you must be an amazing writer if you're teacher thinks you copied, and good luck with your book!

Don't frett it too much OP. I had the same thing happen to me. While writing a book, I discovered another book in the library with the very same topic of my story, then a week later, the same damn thing came up on a Star Trek episode.

At least he didn't fail you..,hope you can clear that up...

Maybe other people have gone through the same thing? Sorry that sucks. FYL

Well, I think you can definitely explain to your teacher to get your grade up. Don't feel bad about the originality, either - completely original ideas are virtually extinct, it's how you tell the story that's gonna matter.

That sucks. As a writer myself, I can understand how frustrating it would be to find out that my story wasn't as original as I thought. Though every idea has been done, so there really is no avoiding some similarities to other stories. You could always tweak it until it's at least slightly more original.

Depending on the OP's story if it borrowed too much from others and it didn't change it enough yeah it is possible and justified. Eragon which is somehow got a movie is basically a mash up of star wars and lord of the rings. It doesn't even really try to be different.

You don't happen to go to Edmond North High school do you? My mythology teacher had us write the same thing....?!

What's it about? Sounds very interesting if its that good!

Was the teacher actually able to point to the specific myth you copied? I'm trying to figure out whether this is a case of accidental plagiarism vs. bad assumptions.
