Maybe this is their way of trying to tell you that she is your birth mother... This used to happen a lot back before teen pregnancy was accepted, older siblings who were capable of raising a child, and married, often became the parents so that the communities wouldn't stare and talk about them, while the child was later told that the birth mother was their sister or aunt.

I deal with infertility issues and my sister in law got me a Mother's Day present because she knows how difficult the holiday is for me. I feel like there's probably some back story to this if OP's mom felt strongly enough about this to ground OP.

How old are you and what reasoning did your parents give you for grounding you for not giving someone who ISN'T a mother a Mother's Day gift? Did she have a kid and lose one? Miscarry?
