He was probably trying to be nice. A lot of people are horrified by the concept, but many people do practice it. He would have had to have taken them to be done years ago, but waited until now to give them to you, thinking maybe that you would be able to appreciate it at this point. Obviously he didn't go about this in the best way, but it seems like he was trying to be a sentimental dad. It's not a psychotic thing to do, it's just not very socially accepted. I am assuming however that your rabbits died natural deaths, and that your father did not kill them. I have known people that have done that to their child's pet rabbit.
