Today, I had a call to the rodent rescue I run. They wanted to know if we had any mice for adoption and how much they cost. I told them that we had over 30 mice, and that we don't charge but do take donations. They said, "That's fantastic! I've been struggling to find snake food that isn't frozen!" FML

bekkylove22 tells us more.

Just to clarify, no I did not allow this person to take any mice. Live feeding is illegal in the UK (where our rescue is based) and the majority of the mice we have are ones that came from illegal 'feeder breeders' that were shut down by the RSPCA after being proven to be selling mice for use as live feed. Some of these mice have been hand reared by me from the day they were born if their mother had abandoned them or died herself, so there's no way in hell I would let them go somewhere they would be used as food. Hope this helped anyone who was asking questions!

new slogan for you; mice are friends, not food

Aww the wonderful cycle of life isn't it intense. At least they aren't just killing them off with traps or poison or worse. Sad reality is that we all eat living things and that's part of the cycle .

My rodent phobia kicked in just thinking about this.

It is legal to feed live in the U.S but frowned upon to do so. (Some herps will only take live or are difficult to make the switch to non moving food, like ball pythons). I wonder if that's why he's been struggling to find live food, if he came from an area where it's legal to feed live.... Or just assumed live food. Yes, most wild snakes eat live... For the record, anything from a weaned mouse or rat up can bite a reptile in a struggle to NOT be a meal, causing "mouth rot", a very hard to treat infection from the bite. Reptiles heal slowly. A dead feeder can not bite, so it's safer for the snake.

Big deal. We live feed our snake once a week

But would you live feed your snake to a mongoose

Live prey feeding is illegal in Aus, largely because of the reasons 92 stated. You can't use "it's how they eat in the wild" and apply it to a completely artificial environment. The risks of harm to both animals outweighs any environmental enrichment benefits.

Then don't adopt to them. You have the right to refuse it.

It's cruel for a snake to eat a mouse? What do you think snakes do in the wild?

Jeez, I can't believe how many people on here are desperate to defend vermin. Do you people burst into tears every time someone swats a fly?

I can't believe how aggressively you're trying to tear them down. "Vermin" make wonderful pets. Some people don't have the space or mobility for larger animals and rats, mice, etc. make wonderful pets for those people. I've had rats for 5+ years and they're lovely creatures. Just because they get a bad reputation for their looks or wild relatives actions doesn't mean they themselves are awful creatures. With that being said, snakes are also wonderful pets! For the same reasons as "vermin!" (Unless they're the larger snakes in which case, still awesome but voids my argument on space). People like different things and there's no point in being an asshole and insulting them or the ANIMAL they like just because you disagree.

As a snake owner, I abhore people like this. We have our own feeder breeders for a reason.

Out of curiosity what was your degree in? How did you become an expert in EVERYTHING about ALL animals making blanket statements as to the type of bedding that is appropriate for "all animals". Where can I get a know-it-all degree?

Well there is a degree called animal management, and there are several colleges/universities in the UK that teach it

Over here, it is basically the veterinarian degree, which does that. You specialise only after getting the base degree which teaches you basic on all animals.

Wow could you be anymore of a bitch.

Why is live feeding illegal in the UK?
