Today, I had my first job interview in months. The guy chuckled mockingly at my master's degree in philosophy and wound up admitting that he had no idea why I'd even been selected to be interviewed. FML

Yeah, I'm in the "You had not one, but two chances to major in something useful" camp. What did you expect?

You should philosophize about why certain portions of mankind feel the need to be dicks

YDI for majoring in the philosophy and for listing the degree in resume applying to a position where it is not needed. What kind of reaction did you expect? You should be thankful to this guy. Unlike all the other who will tell you "wow, philosophy" while thinking to themselves "what an idiot"

I guess the latest me of work is important, but I have no use for a Philosophy major. Strictly academic fields of study are important (I guess), but you can't blame anyone for focusing on potential employees with practical experience and/or education. Maybe the interviewer could've been more professional about it, but he had a point.

Reminds me of an article from a decade about about Philosophy majors. It was an interview with a smug grad who's entire line was "What kind of job can I get with a philosophy degree? Any kind I ******* want." due to it being a degree that many fortune 500 company leaders had and a common degree held by actuaries at the time. Turned out he ruined it for everyone else, as business were reading the article and getting the impression than philosophy grads were all dicks and that the sudden influx of philosophy grads flooded the market.

Why? We're you interviewing for a job in astrophysics? Perhaps as an anesthetician or frame welder?
