Today, I had to present a program to my supervisors in University. Not being a native English speaker, I used my own invented abbreviations for parameters in the program. Apparently STD is not an appropriate abbreviation for "standard deviation." I can still hear them laughing. FML

As much as this sucks for you, you could gone to some writing center or another English teach to get your abbreviations and etc proofread. I didn't vote YDI but still... /:|

You should have gone to a writing teacher to get that comment proofread.

So 2 errors in typed text means I'm illiterate? Real sound logic you got there (not)

Ah... that's an easy one to get caught out with though. My first university lecture, we were told (and have been told every lecture since) to use SD for standard deviation instead of STD unless we want our professor to pick us out about it in front of the whole lecture hall (120 + students). Yeah.... we've all done that once and never done it since.

SD is a better one I think? It's a bit like saying "orgasms" instead of "organisms" in a biology lesson.

I agree. SD seems more right. I'm having a hard time believing this FML

My professor for my Statistics class used that same abbreviation. It's really no big deal, at least it wasn't in my class. Don't worry about it though. They should understand, since English is not your first language.

Actually that's one that I used in my stats class at first. Then I went with just SD

You should give them your "STD".

Because of the 'deviation' bit? SD would make more sense if you have to get rid of a letter.

I am not a native English speaker either, but received my masters degree in English. Read more, read only English - you will be fine ....not right away

I learnt so much by watching "¿Qué pasa, U.S.A.?".

Never has that abbreviation been so hilarious.

I know the feeling. :P Talks of my DSL threw me off.

#29, yeah, you should see the looks I got when I wanted to go watch hockey and asked where the BBW Arena was!

Hope you found out exactly where the puck goes?

Yeah, I rolled her around in flour and looked for the wet spot!

Must be missing something here. DSL = digital subscriber line. Never known it to mean any thing else?
