Today, I had to take the train from my hometown to my university for a very important meeting concerning my foreign exchange program. When I finally arrived, I noticed a Post-it on the door: "Meeting cancelled, sick". I basically made a 9-hour day-trip for a half-an-hour walk. FML

You'd think maybe they'd at least call, or email. How inconsiderate.

With all the technology available today, this just shouldn't happen anymore. Call, text, or email, but who the heck leaves notes?

Take a crap in a box of chocolate and send it to him with a post-it note saying :"thank you for your time"

This happens a lot, and I will never understand why. I mean, look at the choices: Scenario A: Person A is sick. They send an email to the people who were supposed to attend. Nobody shows up. Scenario B: Person A calls into their office to let person B know they won't make it. Person B sends an email to the people who were supposed to attend. Nobody shows up. Scenario C: Person A calls into their office to let person B know they won't make it. Person B gets up, writes a post-it note, walks to the room where the meeting was supposed to take place, and sticks it to the door. Everybody shows up, sees the note, and has to leave again. Out of all these options, they chose the one that required the most effort from all people involved? Why?

Maybe you can send in a bill for your travel costs and time?

Maybe no one had his/her phone number to notify them about the situation

If he thinks he is sick now just wait til u drip some eye drops in his glass...

Did you get an E-mail about it being cancelled? If not they need better communication unless it's lead by foreign person

I am not surprised. I have lost count of how many times where professors will cancel classes and not notify their students about it - at least do it when the weather is horrible and you know you will not be coming in to teach! Hence the reason why I am not surprised that the school was inconsiderate about letting you know about the cancellation.

Last time that happened to me, my professor had the trivial excuse that they were in emergency surgery due to a their throat cancer. Even if he was unwell, his family should have made sure all his students were contacted and informed rather than inconvenienced. Sorry for your trouble OP, but if you are attending a university, everyone would assume you lived nearby. Maybe you can reschedule for a video conference.

Throat cancer is a wee bit more serious than the 'trivial excuse' you seem to think it is. Health scares make everything fly out the window. Sure it sucks to show up to a class only to find it's been cancelled without prior notice but at least you weren't having your neck sliced into.

If a family member of mine was having emergency surgery for CANCER, I wouldn't give a flying shit about a bunch of students being 'inconvenienced'.

32, 33 AND 34, seriously, none of you noticed the irony in this comment?

9 hour day yrip for a half an hour walk??? WTF does that mean?

It means it took them 9 hours to get to their university, then they walked for half an hour to the room the meeting was in only to learn it was cancelled.

OP is Dutch though - the country is really not big enough to travel through for 9 hours by train, so it's probable that OP traveled slightly over 4 hours and then had to travel another 4 hours to get home

Wow he must have been "sick" of meetings
