Agree with BIGshooter, gap insurance is worth the extra couple of hundred quid, d'oh.
In Qubec WE HAVE to have insurence, they don't sell you a car without proof of it. But not everyone take Gap Insurance, it's not mendatory. But it's pretty stupid not to take it went you buy a new car.
I don't know where you live, but uhm... Usually when you DON'T outright own the car, you HAVE to have full coverage. Were you violating the law?
Buying gap insurance and learning how to drive are two things you should have done before departing.
For most of you wondering why purchase a new car over a used car? First of all it is much easier getting a loan on a new car then it is on a used car. And u can usually find lower interest rates. And most new cars these days come with outstanding bumper to bumper warranties.
This is BullSheet. Not many ,if any, loan companies give loans for new cars and do not require the buyer to get full coverage insurance. Same thing with buying a home, no insurance, no loan. If you drop the insurance coverage, the loan company will provide you with insurance at a much higher rate. The loan company will get the insurance money before you do in order to pay off the loan. If did manage to get a new car loan without insurance, why would you be dumb enough to pay the five years on the loan? You should stop paying on the loan and let the bank or loan company come and repo the totaled car.
To everyone saying, why buy a new car if you can't afford to pay for it - paying for something you're using and enjoying is quite different from paying for something that's doing you no good at all. It's like you might spend £5000 on a car but wouldn't drop £5000 down the drain. Sorry, OP.

Ummm insurance?
Yeah, insurance should cover it, they should give you money for another car in the amount of what your car was worth before the accident. And if you don't have insurance, YDI.
