the keys in the bowl thing was really more in the 70's and 80's (although it still happens some) and happened at parties not establishments. typically when someone refers to a swingers establishment they'll be refering to a small club, typically they'll have small rooms and a common area, some also offer pool tables, hot tubs, etc. and adults interested in less monagamous relationships will go there to socialize and/or hook up. it's a more laid back affair these days than it used to be with the more structures parties. it's a really interesting subculture and several fascinating books have been written on the topic.

my parents are the owners of a swingers club in a major us city have owned and operated it for over a decade. its where a couple goes to a place where it is ok to have sex with other partners. it eliminates the chance of them cheating on each other, because when they go there, they are giving each other permission to sleep with anyone there. The only rule is, you don't have an affair outside the swinger establishment. What happens there, stays there.
