Today, I learned the hard way that if you tell your child that they're old enough to cook their own food in the microwave, you have to make sure they're smart enough not to put the metal spoon in with the food as well. FML

It's not about how smart the kid is, it's about how dumb you are for not telling him what he should not put in the microwave. YDI.

Expecting a kid to know to not put metal in a microwave without being told is like expecting anti-obesity groups to blame parents rather than McDonalds for child obesity.

You use "smart enough" as if they're stupid for not knowing something you apparently never told them. Looks like the poor kid doesn't have much of a chance.

apparently you also have to make sure the child has at least one parent smart enough to teach them not to put silverware in the microwave.

LOL I accidentally put the spoon in the microwave once, but I'm 14 and I can very well use a microwave. I was just super tired and not paying attention. My microwave was fine, though. But YDI for sure, if nobody ever told me when I was 7 and learning how to use the microwave not to put silverware in it, I wouldn't have known.

It depends on the age of the child. My dad still calls me a kid but I'm 18, just cause I'm his kid. If this child is a teen, then this stuff is generally taught in like middle school in home ec. If the child is like 7, it's a definite YDI

I'm 19 and I didn't know. Haha. I've started a couple microwave fires recently. :/
