Becckzfizz tells us more.
Hello, I wrote this, Yes I'm in England. I'd text my mum to let her know that I was on my way home, she'd replied and all was well. Next thing I know she's ringing me again thinking that I've done a runner from the hospital. The doctor had discharged me and signed all of my forms, though the nurses on duty had not been notified of this and immediately called the police to report me as a missing person (even though I was waiting for my taxi in the hospital entrance), the police then contacted my emergency contact (my mum) and then she called me. I understand that it wasn't the Doctors fault, it was just a clerical error. All clear?

Maybe OP and the mother aren't close? Regardless, it seems by the way the FML is worded that the hospital staff, besides OP's doctor, did not know that OP was discharged and that they called the police to report him missing. Why would the police call the mother to say OP is missing, if she was the one that reported him missing in the first place? Also it seems that OP's doctor may not of did some of the proper paperwork, if no one else knew that OP had been discharged.
The nurse discharges you. Working in a hospital I've never seen a dr do more then write orders.
Dang it. I hate it when people use the word "whilst" to try to look smart. Just use "while", for Pete's sake!
I think it's a british thing dude.
At least you're not actually missing....hope that's the first time so your not alone...
Something is really screwy with that hospital. If you were seen by the Dr and he gave you the ok to go home, he should have documented it in your notes or told your nurse. Generally then the nurse would go through your discharge with you make sure you had any medications needed, remove your cannula if you had one, see that your follow up was organised etc. Even if all those steps were missed and there was a misunderstanding between you and your Dr, he says you are fine to go home, does not mention that you need to wait for discharge papers, and you just wander out the door and call a taxi. The nurses would not have time to miss you by the time you called a taxi, let alone long enough to call and file a police report, give all the information over, and for the police to call your Mum, then her to call you. I have had patients misunderstand before, go home without telling anyone, and the first thing I do is call the patient or their ICE contact. If there is no answer, only then would I call the police. Hopefully the OP will explain further. Unless the OP had to wait for several hours for a taxi.
Hmm, I doubt you are a minor because if so, your parents are not allowed to leave you alone at the hospital without a family member staying behind. If you are a patient brought in by the police and are watched by security, the police would have followed up on your status before updating your mother about it. It seems to me that some misunderstanding happened and doctors are not responsible for informing others about a patient being discharged. They only do so when they have something to tell the family members of their patients or if they were requested to do so. Even if they write their discharge orders on your chart, it does not mean they will go and inform every family member of their patients about their loved one leaving the hospital. If you are really curious as to what happened, I would contact the police about it. The police was either given false information or did not follow up throughly with your status before telling your mother about how "you went missing". All I am trying to say is that doctors are not responsible for contacting people about a patient's status, unless the patients are in a critical state or they have questions concerning their patient's health. It is up to the loved ones to be the ones following up on the patients, unless they tell the healthcare workers about giving them a call if something changes (which is often done by nurses). Nevertheless, I hope your poor mother was able to reach you soon after she heard the false news.
Who told you minors require a parent or guardian left at the hospital? That not right, not in the US and not in the UK. Having been a minor, in the hospital in both countries I can personally attest to this being bad information. A parent or guardian needs to be present to provide consent for treatment. But there's no requirement that someone is there during recovery.
What a confusing comment section.... YLS OP.... Hope your milk carton mug shot looks nice at least lol
At least she cares enough to actually be crying and to call you
Ditzy doctor on duty. Seems like he would make an interesting character in a show.
