Today, I looked in my voicemails on my phone. I recently got a message saying that I got the job, which was very exciting because it's my first job. Too bad it was sent 2 weeks ago and I just got it because I upgraded my phone. FML

Hey, op! In case you were wondering, I didn't get the job. I called after I realized I missed the opportunity and they said no jobs were open. Now for you curious people, the job was as a cashier at McDonalds, (yes they hire) and I don't know how much I would have gotten payed, I was just ecstatic to have a job, plus it would have been before my college student brother ever got one. But I can still beat him to get a drivers license ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Hopefully you can call too see if the spot is still open.

Maybe try explaining the situation to them and hope for the best? Good luck, OP.

If you were expecting a possible call back from a job. Then you should have made sure your phone had the ability to get voice mail and you and listen to them. You should have been more responsible. You have no one to blame but yourself.

Technology malfunctions. It might not always occur to people to check, especially if you normally get missed call notifications, and you haven't used voicemail. I've actually not gotten voicemail once in my thirty years... It's always been straight up calls, e-mails and, more recently, Skype.

The prison is stating its because of an update she didn't get her voicemail. Should have had the common sense to update the phone earlier. Phones notify you multiple times daily about phone update. Next time update your phone, if out and you need your phone update it when your eating dinner or in the shower. Where you don't need to look at your phone for 30min( not that the update will take 30 min)

OP didn't know when they would call her, so she couldn't plan the update around it.

How else is the employer suppose to get in contact with him. I don't see an employer send an email, that has a possibility of getting lost in spam. Maybe the employer will go to his house and tell him in person. Yes he's going to stop in the middle of he busy schedule and go to the op house to tell him he got the job. Instead of using the device called a PHONE to call him from his office. @25 think before you make a comment!

Most of my pre-contract interaction has been via e-mail. It is actually considered more formal and legally binding than calls over here.

didn't check your voicemail because you upgraded your phone. YOU DESERVE IT! even if you upgrade your phone you can still call the number from another phone and listen to your messages. it is your own fault!

Did they know to expect voicemail? I actually haven't received voicemail once in thirty years. It's simply not used in some places.

I don't know where you have been for 30 years and haven't gotten voice mail, maybe you have no life so you answer every phone call. But the whole purpose of an answering machine/ voice mail is to leave a message if you don't answer the phone. The employer might not have said over the phone that they got the job but they would have said to call them back.

It's very uncommon to leave a voice mail in my country. If someone doesn't pick up, I assume they will call me back. If it's urgent, I'll try again shortly and/or send a text message with what my call would've been about. I genuinely don't know anyone who would willingly leave a voice mail. However, then I moved to England and apparently voice mails are a completely normal thing here. The OP might be from somewhere where voice mails are not common and therefore they didn't know to except one. Also - I have been told multiple times NOT to call back myself - maybe it's an industry thing (media) and because they have too many applicants, maybe it's something else. Unless it was a proper dream job I was gunning not another hopeful CV to any somewhat relevant position, I would've missed the call same as OP.

By far most of my interaction with various employers has been via e-mail. It's considered more formal and binding than calls, for one. Friends/family usually just IM me. More recent employers have also used Skype. If contact was made by phone, majority of the people I know will just call again later if the phone does not get picked up. Or I will see the missed call notice and call back myself. Not sure where you get the idea that I'd have no life just because voicemail is typically not used where I live? That's some leap of logic.

Could someone please explain how not upgrading the phone prevents the user from checking voicemail? I think there's something I'm missing here.

Same here. Also if they called,it should be notification that someone was calling to OP.

Sometimes things glitch. My old phone did that. I didn't get voicemail notifications, and I don't answer strange numbers, so when I finally upgraded my phone I had tons of voicemails I had no idea about. Thankfully none like OP's but still. Technology isn't infallible.

I find this odd as their is usually a procuring event to a voicemail to which their is no mention of said event in said story

I had this problem too. When I went to get it fixed they told me my phone was so old that they just stopped supporting it and didn't bother to notify me. I had to buy a brand new phone. That's the thanks you get for not breaking your phone and making it last.

Hey my iPhone 4 lasted me a solid three years! Then the FML app got super slow and glitchy so I upgraded... (actually semi true as to the reason I upgraded)
