Babies like white noise because it reminds them of the soothing sounds they heard in utero. Get a white noise maker and try the different sounds: falling raindrops, ocean waves, wind blowing, etc. Chances are, one will work and be mire pleasant than the vacuum. :)

Haha that sucks! I can't stand the sound of babies crying, it's annoying! But then the vacuum is a pretty annoying sound too. Couldn't you find something else to entertain the baby?
