Today, I received a surprise "absolute final notice" email for payment of an overdue fee from the university I withdrew from 6 months ago. Turns out, my old landlord has been hoarding their letters to me. As a result, my credit is now in the shitter and I had to pay an extra $120 in interest. FML

Isn't it illegal to be hoarding someone's mail? I'm sure there are courts that'll take your case. You can probably make your dumbass landlord pay the fees and the interest.

I'm speechless. What possible reason could your landlord have for hoarding letters? All I imagine is a handmade ship constructed with mail and spit.

ydi for not realizing you haven't been getting your bills

It's your own fault. You deserved it for not giving the university your new address to ensure you received the statements in a timely fashion. Shows a complete lack of responsibility. Way to go.

If you haven't turned your book in yet. My roommate had an over due book like that once, and he just told them that he turned it in and that they must have lost it. I later went and "checked it out", so the library emailed him and apologized, wiping his charges clean.

I seriously doubt he hoarded your mail. I fail to see how you have any legal recourse to sue him in small claims court, either. I'd imagine that by hoarded you mean he didn't forward it to you on his own, as if that was his responsibility. OP should have filed a forward order with the post office and notified creditors of the change of address. It's called being responsible. You fail at life.

#40, it IS the landlord's responsibility to at the very least return the mail to the post office. In that aspect, the landlord was in the wrong, and the OP could have a legitimate case.

Unless you're lying about something, that's illegal. If you can't get the fee waved, then at the very least you're legally entitled to compensation for the extra fees. If the landlord doesn't pay up, then take him to court.

dude i think all around the world peopls credit is aready in the shitter but anyway usally when people are shouting sue i think there crazy but yeah this guy fuked you over and you should sue keeping someones mail is not just an accident or a misunderstanding (usally) and your credit is ruind now so take it up in court. (wow i spell like shit)

Well, I can see that the same intelligentsia who always handout the advice to sue are out in force. I never cease to be amazed at the people who think you just have to show up at the nearest courthouse and explain things to the judge and you'll go home with everything restored to your liking. Face up to the fact that some people are a$$holes and that everything that makes you angry isn't going to be a payday for you. The landlord can deny everything you tell the judge who will rule against 5 seconds later when it becomes one person's word against the other. A win in small claims court won't change your credit rating. OP, why are you the only person left in the world who doesn't have electronic correspondence with your creditors? YDI because you should know what you owe them without having to be notified in writing. Furthermore, you said you paid $120 in interest so your payment would be noted even if it appeared on your credit report at all. I can't imagine any university reporting this kind of thing to the credit bureaus. I made bigger mistakes with my credit when I was younger and a mere 5 years later, I purchased a home and still have a very good credit rating. Most creditors look at your whole history and they all want your business unless your poor rating is the result of many bad decisions - especially in this economy. If this is the only thing on your record, I promise that it is nothing to worry about.
