Today, I refused to let two students into class because they were 15 minutes late. It turns out they were late because they had gone to buy me a birthday cake. FML

LimeyGoodteeth tells us more.

I am the original poster. It was an adult ESOL class. School policy - strictly adhered to - is that students can't be admitted if they are more than 5 minutes late and all students know this. Lateness is disruptive and disrespectful to other students. We all eventually had the cake later anyway!

that's why u always ask before u act..

That's what my cousin does. She shows up really late but she always has food for the teacher and says she was buying him food. Works like a charm. She is his favorite student.

Ur lucky it wasn't me. You would have found that cake smashed on ur car.

To all the teachers on this board, sorry for these idiot comments. Rules are there for a reason, When you walk in, all 'I'm so cool 'cause I'm late', you're interrupting our learning time with your short, confusing answers that wastes more of the teachers time because you want to seem cool. Yeah, these guys might have meant well, but the time taken to sing happy birthday or eat a cake means less time for us to learn. With stricter teaching rules, how are we going to pass if for every single birthday there is a cake? Save it for intervals or lunches. 15 minutes is a long time in class.

So the best option is to not let them join class at all? Makes no ******* sense. Yes they should get reprimanded but not in a way that doesn't allow them to learn. You're a teacher for goodness sake

I cannot understand why everyone's bashing on you. lateness is lateness and they should've gotten the cake earlier or notified you that they'd be late. it's quite simple and my classmates often do this for birthdays. and to all those wondering what kicking them out will do- cause the students to miss important information, thus failing aka teach them a lesson. anyways OP i totally support your action.
