Today, I refused to let two students into class because they were 15 minutes late. It turns out they were late because they had gone to buy me a birthday cake. FML

I am the original poster. It was an adult ESOL class. School policy - strictly adhered to - is that students can't be admitted if they are more than 5 minutes late and all students know this. Lateness is disruptive and disrespectful to other students. We all eventually had the cake later anyway!

That's what my cousin does. She shows up really late but she always has food for the teacher and says she was buying him food. Works like a charm. She is his favorite student.

You missed out on cake. YDI. Cake is awesome. I go to art college, and everyone there is so laid back, if you turn up late, you just sign yourself in and get on with whatever it is you want to do. It's great. (:

what a bitchy thing to do. they were getting something FOR YOU. you could have given them a warning, AT MOST. you are the reason why student's are doing so badly in school. they WERE THINKING OF YOU AND YOU DISRESPECTED THEM. rules? RESPECT is MUCH MORE IMPORTANT. SHAME ON YOU!

MAYBE they were late because they had classes BEFORE YOURS and had to use their -break- to go and get you a cake?!? You're the teacher, after all; use your professional problem-solving techniques! :/
