Hey guys, OP here. She immediately apologized after, but the damage was done. Like a couple of you said, Mom didn't want me to be upset during the last couple of months of my trip. I'm 18 and was on an exchange program, so I wasn't there for most of the development up to this statement. It's difficult, but I could see very quickly that my parents weren't happy. Things are better now, with Mom here in New Zealand and my dad in the States. Sorry to all of you who have been through this as well.

Actually, I think that's the best way to tell you this. She didn't do it on the phone / over the internet, to not ruin your trip, plus those are important news, that are meant for one-on-one. If she didn't tell you right away, then it would've been more difficult to find out... at least that's how I see it, but I am sorry for you and your parents..
Welcome home!

ha my parents did that to me too - while I was away at Uni and then on my birthday my dad thought it would be a good time to tell me they were splitting up. I guess they get so worked up about it they have to get it off their chest asap and don't think about the impact it has on others. I'm really sorry to hear about your experience OP.

Man that sucks. Way too blunt. Sorry OP.
Damn, my parents did that to me after I delivered my first child. It's one of those huge moment spoilers. I'm sorry they greeted you like that. Welcome home!
