Today, I saw my family for xmas. My cousin, an artist, said the still life I am doing for class isn't art and that I should drop out for trade school. I showed everyone my final, they liked it/said to keep going to school. She "agreed" but still thinks my projects aren't art. I can't win. FML

Sounds like jealousy and insecurity over their own ability. What you're doing is art, and you should continue on this path if it's what you want. Don't let their words dissuade you.

Oh jeez tell your cousin to go f* off. Lesson Nr. 1 in art is that there is no way to define what is and is not art. She might not like it or she might be jealous, but that's the kind of person whose advice you can safely ignore and you'll see your life turn around for the better. Now go make as much art as you want, next time she complains, duct tape her mouth and call it performance art.

She just wants to be the only artist in the family

Everyone has a right to their opinions & Everyone has a right to take said opinions with a grain of salt

Sounds like your cousin is just jealous that your work is better than hers. I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. Just keep doing what you love to do, OP.

Art is subjective. If you like it, anyone else’s opinion is irrelevant.

Please tell that so called "artist" cousin that a true artist appreciates all kinds of artwork, even if they are not a fan of one's work. Art is about creativity and exploring one's imagination. Tell your cousin that you are sorry that despite being "an artist", she does not have the ability to understand art.

I have mixed feelings about this. You're probably a good artist, but even if you are, a trade skill will actually put food on the table, Art generally won't no matter how good you are... You could show up your cousin simply by being able to afford to eat more than Ramen noodles every week.
