Today, I spent a lot of money buying a birthday gift for a close friend, only to find out I'm not even invited to the party. FML

If it's something you'd like, then just keep it. Don't invest money/time/effort in a friendship that's just onesided. Sorry, OP

Return the gift and buy yourself something nice with the money you spent on it

Guess you're not as close as you thought...

Return the gift or keep it for yourself. That's not a real friend.

In my opinion, the best policy would be to maintain a distance with your friend. Good thing you found out the truth about them. Also, don't let them know if it hurts because they probably don't even care and you can maintain your dignity this way.

Then send back the gift and cut your loses.

Don't know why anyone downvoted you and #43. You both seem to be part of the few sensible ones.

Return when they ask why you got them no present tell them oh I wasn't invited to the party so you don't get any present

You are incredibly childish...Being petty about it won't do anything but cause a bigger problem.

How is that childish? OP went out of their way to get them a gift (I'm assuming it was probably expensive), the least their friend could do was put their name on a lousy invite, it's not that hard!

Keeping or returning it isn't childish. But "no party no present" is childish.
