Today, I told my Dad I was an alcoholic and had decided to seek help. His reply, "Don't stop drinking, you are the life of the party, funny and beautiful when you drink." FML

He cares more about you being the "life of the party" than being healthy? Wow.

When you are ready to sober up you have to cut all of the negative people out of your life. I hope your father decides that he wants to help you sober up but if not you may have to distance yourself from him. Dec 18 was 3 years sober for me and I had to cut many people out of my life, including family members. Best of luck op, you can do this. You just need to find a real support system. It will be the hardest thing you have ever done but I promise you that it will be worth it.

Awww thumbs up for supportive dads (no matter what you do)!!

You should consider abandoning your family and doing something with your life so people don't remember you only the way your father wants you to behave. First step of the twelve is done. Do the rest and amazing things will happen!

Probably Dad recognizes that in almost all cases, alcoholics that need help are rarely capable of self-diagnosing. Therefore, your announcement probably sounded more like a plea for attention than a plea for help. I doubt your dad would totally miss the fact that you were spiraling down in addiction. In the case that you do truly need help, I pray that you are able to overcome the demon. God bless!
