Today, I took my car into the mechanic to have two tires and battery put in, all new. I later got a call saying they tried to start my car on the dead battery, which sparked and started a fire. It's gonna take two weeks to get the parts and it's minus 30 outside. FML

$10 says that they put a jump box on your frozen and dead battery to start your car and move it in from the lot to the work bay inside. Usually the car won't start but I have seen sparks fly if the clamps either touch each other or, in this case, the electricity from the jump box finds an easier path to ground than through your wasted battery.

"dead batteries" are incapable of starting car fire... batteries explode, but not dead ones. You're being played. Lawyer, or mechanically informed person to go with you to shop ... discussion will be interesting. They have to eat the damage, and pay for your transportation for 2 weeks. Also get the odometer reading so you know how many miles this "dead car" goes. Don't laugh, its happened.

Dead batteries would explode. But if you ever worked at a shop you'd know machanics don't work where ever you leave car. And since tires were getting replaced they'd have to move to a surface that would be convenient for them, either being a lift or a jack with air access. Idk about you, but if i had to move a car with dead battery I'd jump it to move it, makes sense right? Why push something that should start if it's just a battery. You may not know, but people also neglect their car. For all we know this is a 93 civic with hacked wiring.

They were replacing the battery. Anybody with common sense would just change the battery in the parking lot and then move the car. Makes a lot more sense than jumping a car in negative weather. What shop jumps a car with anything but a jump pack anyways? A jump pack wouldn't start a fire. I honestly don't even see how a dead battery sparked unless they hooked it up backwards...

Where the hell do you live? antartica? move your ass to Oklahoma. the weather is a lot more bearable here.

If the battery is dead how did it spark anything to cause a fire?

What does the temp have to do with anything? Have someone take you back home, or stay at a friend's. There's no relation to the temp unless you are somehow homeless and only had that car to stay in. Which still isn't good protection against cold.

I figure OP mentioned the temp because usually without a car, people walk.

You know a dummy could put a battery in.

They are so at fault. They set your car on fire to jack up the price of parts. Better get the odometer reading since you have the VIN for your car. There is something up. I would also ask if they are paying for the damages and the replacement parts since it is their fault, and GET IT IN WRITING what happened. If you have to go to court, then they have admitted what they did. Also get in writing what you wanted when you got there.

My husband works for a mechanics shop and they have paid for a rental for a few days when one of his coworkers accidentally ran the car to far in the garage and dented the the front. They fixed it, and gave them a discount on the original fixing. That's what their insurance is for, and hopefully you can look onto that.

minus 30? where the **** you live, Antarctica?
