Today, I took my dog to the vet because he hadn't eaten his food in three days, was drinking a lot of water, and was peeing a lot (all signs of antifreeze poisoning). I spent $200 at the vet to tell me that my dog is fine and just didn't like his current food. FML

That also could have been a sign of diabetes, so you did the right thing!

kittyrose: wasn't trying to offend just stating that I wasn't just some Joe blow shooting my mouth off. and I suggested those tests for hyperthyroidism bc of several misdiagnosed cats, one being my own, bc of only checking a t4 level. started with similar symptoms and several university veterinarians agreed with my assessment.  let's not do this I was only trying to help someone out.

you never give your dog any treats? if you had given him treats, im sure he would have at least liked one brand you bought, and you would have easily seen that he does have an appetite, which would have only cost you $10 or so. YDI

dogs don't not eat for 3 days because they don't like food. They might not eat it for 1 day because they don't like it.. but if that's the only reason why.. they'll eventually eat it. (This is NOT true for cats) Chocolate isnt THAT harmful to dogs... I chocolate expresso bean wouldn't do anything to any dog. there's specific amounts/pound they have to eat for it to be considered toxic. Its okay to give dogs "people food" if it's specific. Vet's often recommend boiled chicken breasts, white rice, and cottage cheese. Parvo has WAY more symptons than not eating. if the dog had parvo there would be watery bloody diarrhea all over this person's house. This person was COMPLETELY right for taking the dog to the vet. to everyone who suggested alternatives.. I know it seems like a waste of money and it's so much easier to look it up online.. but what would you do if your child didn't eat for 3 days? look it up online and hope what any idiot can post on Wikipedia is right? If I were you, I'd get a second opinion. It may seem like a waste of money but if your dog does have a serious illness, think of how you'll feel that you stopped trying to fix it.

Note "speak your mind, but please try and be respectful" stop calling each other idiots. Some people don't know because THEY ARE NOT VETERINARIANS. Respect and learn from comments... don't put each other down because who knows.. you could be wrong. thanks =]

you worry too much. dogs don't want to eat healthy or cheap.

ydi cuz u shuda tried feeding him other food

Don't complain. Vets in all rights are doctors too, just that they don't specialize. They also have huge student loans to pay off for their studies and they save lives too. You don't go waltzing into the doctor's office and demanding a discount do you? If you can't afford to pay for your pet's welfare, don't get one. Besides that, I applaud you on your fast thinking for your dog, it could very well have been something more serious.

Better safe than sorry. I think you did a good thing
