Today, I took my dog to the vet because he hadn't eaten his food in three days, was drinking a lot of water, and was peeing a lot (all signs of antifreeze poisoning). I spent $200 at the vet to tell me that my dog is fine and just didn't like his current food. FML

hey...at least your dog is fine! i'd spend a lot more if it came to my dog's health!

That also could have been a sign of diabetes, so you did the right thing!

I don't understand. You say 'fyl' because you found out your dog is FINE? So you'd actually PREFER if he/she was seriously sick so that it would've been worth the bill? How cruel. Everytime I take my dog to the vet, I pay the bill praying the vet will say my baby has nothing serious. BTW, it's pretty normal for dogs to reject their food once in a while. He'll start eating it again in some days.

You did the right thing by checking it out with the vet, $$$ or not. Your animals' lives are in your hands. I just thought it was only cats that this type of thing happened with.

I wish my vet would tell me what's wrong with my cat. I've taken him to the vet three times over the past year and a half for the same problem. He suddenly will drop about 5lbs. I take him to the vet and te vet says "Oh he's just losing weight. He'll be fine." and then he'll gain the weight back. But I know that it isn't normal. Cat's don't just drop that much weight. That's a little over a third of his total weight. (he's about 14lbs at his normal size. No he's not fat. He's just very tall and long.) I hate when his weight drops, because it's SO sudden and I have no idea what causes it. I would take him to a different vet but the only other vet in the area is an emergency clinic, which costs $800. Usually by the time I get that much money together he's put most of his weight back on. Sorry. Totally irrelevant.

Sounds more like parvo to me. It's great that the dog is healthy, though.

actually it sounds nothing like parvo, which causes severe diarrhea in puppies...

Actually, it sounds a lot like parvo, which makes dogs stop eating, but drink a lot of water, idiot.

hmm I'd get asexond opinion. those are also signs of diabetes and kidney disorders.

boatkicker: tell your vet to test for hyperthyroidism. tell him to run a t4 and free t4 blood level (not just a t4 that's inconclusive and most vets don't check both). if a cat suddenly loses weight and stops eating this can also lead to fatty liver which in and of itself is life threatening. hope this helps!!!! feel free to PM me.

Yes, but, boatkicker is in fact talking about a cat. Your argument is invalid.

It was about my comment about my cat. I went off on a bit of a rant about how my cat keeps losing and regaining HUGE amounts of weight and my vet says not to worry. 5 lbs of a 14lb animal is way to much for me to "not worry"

This is why you should always experiment with the food you're giving your pet. Also you should have noticed since it started happening after you got him new food...
