It sounds to me like he maybe just wanted to insult someone - he could have picked you at random.. i mean that line sounds practiced... 'not even with beer goggles' keep your chin up OP - it is about opinion - i know a stunning girl my friend thinks is really ugly and others think she looks great.

This is definitely true. It's like calling someone smarter than you "stupid". The whole point is to make someone doubt their looks/smarts/whatever so you feel better about yourself. It's not always the reason for saying mean things, but it happens.
