Today, I was at a concert. It was dark and everyone was singing and waving their lit-up phones in the air. I was having a great time, until someone snatched my £200 phone out of my hand. FML

I don't know how pounds compare to the American dollar, but over here a fancy smart phone can cost $500-600.

Here you can buy phones for up to $600 And you keep it without a plan. The only downside is you just spent $600 on a phone that will probably be worthless in a couple of years. Buying a plan though can be just as expensive. Smartphones range from $0-200. Plus plans for them aren't cheap. As long as your phone gets what you need done, then it's worth it. But these phones come on a 3 year contract and you can't switch phones until its up. If you want a new phone it'll end up costing you big $$.

Here in the UK an iPhone 4s can cost you £500-£600 (780-940 USD) but then apple products cost more here than in the US. It's pretty easy to spend £200 on a phone.
