Today, I was at work talking to an older man. As our conversation ended, he said, "Thank you, ma'am." Then, he quickly stumbled over his words as he said, "I mean, thank you, sir. I meant sir. I think." He gazed at me for a moment in confusion, then darted away. FML

Hello peoples, I do believe that the old man meant no harm. I'm not sure if his eye sight was bad, or if he just had different expectations for the way a woman should look. I look quite feminine usually, just not in my work uniform. My hair is very short for a woman, and since I am too slim at the moment I kind of disappear into my work clothes. I wasn't wearing make-up, so I'm sure I looked a little masculine to him. It's okay, my self-esteem was only briefly wounded.

Old people - always inappropriately funny.

The old fart needs to have his cataracts taken care of. Either that or you need to shave.

Show him your **** to clear up his confusion! You can always show us your **** first to practice your flashing move.

Then you'll complain that they're indistinguishable from your man-boobs.

#47, if they are as hairy as mine, I'll be too busy puking to complain.

You're either a very handsome woman or a irresistibly pretty man. Don't let that guy bring you down OP! You're beautiful to someone no matter what another individual tells you. :)

When I'm not sure, I always look at the person's hands. Guys tend to have longer ring fingers than index. Though must admit, Brittney Griner's hands vs Adam's apple confuses me. :P

That very awkward moment of confusion, ma'am. I mean sir. No, I meant ma'am.

These things happen often nowadays. I'm tall and have small breasts, so when my hair was even shorter (it's shoulder length now, so it's harder to confuse) I had to wear very feminine clothes to avoid people mistaking me for a boy (specially since I'm part Japanese and Japanese guys tend to look naturally effeminate to a lot of people). Even more so if the other person is an old man, that's a completely normal mistake nowadays, so unless you were wearing a very girly dress or have a hairstyle that couldn't possibly be seeing as anything but feminine, I wouldn't be concerned at all.

He had it right the the first time...but I have done that before and have had it done to me...it happens...

Poor girl. Don't take it to heart - older people are crazy sometimes! :x it's happened to me once before too, and I didn't let myself get offended by it because I'm quite feminine and I'm sure you probably are too.

I'm HOPING you were wearing a military uniform? Maybe he thought you should be addressed as "sir" because you were in uniform?
