I'm yet to encounter an old person who will hold a door open for someone other than their spouse, even if another person is right behind them. I'm sure they're out there, but my experience indicates otherwise. And by old person, I mean those aged 70 years onwards. Sometimes I get the impression they are more of an entitled generation than the stereotypical Gen Y.

You should just have said this. "Madam, I am under no obligation whatsoever to hold this door open for you. Secondly, the fact that I am part of the younger generation means that I understand that this door is in fact ee-lec-tronic. Do you understand? It works with electricity." Cool but condescending.

Wow, the worst part is, you can't even try to explain it to them.

I ******* HATE old people. Entitled and judgemental pricks. Respect goes both ways, and if old people think that we're obligated to respect them after they insult us, hell no! Being the "older generation" and being condescending is not going to make me feel inclined to respect you any more. Open the automatic door on your own bitch. I was raised to respect them because they're your elder. I will respect anyone until they give me a valid reason not to.

Not once have i ever seen an old person hold a door for anyone other than someone they know (spouse, family member, etc.), so they really have no right to yell at us.
