I'd bet dollars to peanuts that this is not the first thing he's done which has left you wondering if he's just an insensitive ahole (pro tip: he is). Be happy it's just boyfriend and not husband, hopefully you see that if he's acting like this now it won't be good later, dump him now or it'll be worse later. And to other people saying "What if he didn't know she was having a operation" How would you not know if you were her boyfriend that she was at the hospital?
