Today, I was shopping at my workplace, out of uniform, with my husband. A customer recognised me and wanted me to serve him, but I couldn't since we can be fired for doing so while off-duty. He complained to my manager, who wasted no time publicly bitching me out. FML

So wait, the person who is in authority, and should know the rules complains that you follow the rules? I think we know who really needs firing here!

What did your husband do? Or was he not around?

I would gather up witness and take this to HR

Why didn't you just walk away? It's your day off, you're not getting paid, and you don't have to deal with that. That's what I would have done. **** that.

My boyfriend works as a Seafood clerk at a grocery store, people know him there. He helps people pick out fish/meat. No one has ever threatened to fire him over that. If anything, it's polite. What, you can't help someone pick out a pair of jeans or go get someone that IS working to help the customer? You deserved it.

It was her day off. OP shouldn't have to deal with the work of an employee when she is not on the clock. If anything, OP could have just said to go see another employee. I used to work retail, I'm not going to waste my time helping countless people while I am just a customer myself.

I hope you and/or your husband defended yourself against this manager. I would have told him to **** off. If someone wants to publicly bitch me out for no reason, I'm going to publicly bitch right back.

I'm guessing they bitched you out even more when you were off duty and working?

this happens to me where i work a lot. (small town grocery store) it always pisses me off at the customer. just because i work here doesnt mean i want to help you when im not getting paid for it.

Since some cannot read, you were bitched out because you did not walk behind the counter basically. Serving means ring them up in this case. Legally cannot do so, and she would be using someone else's register (which is a liability issue). Tell him does he want to go to jail for making you work when you are not on the clock? I would talk to your store manager about it immediately.
